Introduction
The Foreword to The Urantia Book can overwhelm first time readers. |
There is much confusion respecting the meaning of such terms as God, divinity, and deity. People are also confused and uncertain about the relationships of the divine personalities designated by the various names of deity. This paper seeks to rectify this confusion. The patience of the reader is requested as the unfolding of the deity hierarchy requires the explanation of the position of each personality to be deferred due to the complexity of the subject. Imagine the difficulties the authors of The Urantia Book faced when they introduced this revelation to the unknowing potential readers. Like, where do we start? The Urantia Book provides a comprehensive background for understanding the physical, mindal, and spiritual structure of the universe—a universe that is spirit dominated and personality managed. This webpage provides an overview of some of those personalities and their relationship to the personality core of reality—the Universal Father and the Paradise Trinity. |

Paradise
At the center of the universe of universes is the stationary Isle of Paradise, the geographic center of infinity, and the abiding place of the Universal Father, the Eternal Son, and the Infinite Spirit.
Paradise is the absolute source and the eternal focal point of all energy-matter in the universe of universes. This central Isle is the most gigantic organized body of cosmic reality in all the master universe. Paradise is motionless. It is ellipsoid and essentially flat.
The immensity, material beauty, and spiritual glory of Paradise are beyond the comprehension of the finite mind of man. Since you are beginning to glimpse the enormousness of the material universe, it should become evident to you that such a tremendous material universe must have an adequate and worthy capital, a headquarters commensurate with the dignity and infinitude of the universal Ruler of all this vast and far-flung creation of material realms and living beings.
After all, to mortals the most important thing about eternal Paradise is the fact that this perfect abode of the Universal Father is the real and far-distant destiny of the immortal souls of the mortal and material sons of God.
Revolving clockwise about Paradise are three seven-world circuits, the sacred spheres of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, enormous worlds of unexcelled grandeur and unimagined glory.

The Central Universe (Havona)
The central universe of Havona revolves clockwise about Paradise and its 21 satellites. It is of enormous dimensions and almost unbelievable mass and consists of one billion perfect worlds of unimagined beauty and superb grandeur. These worlds are arranged in seven concentric circuits represented in blue on the drawing. The circuits are not superimposed; their worlds follow each other in linear procession in one vast plane. Havona is not a time creation; it is an eternal existence. Each Havona world is different-no two are alike.Surviving mortals in their ascension to Paradise, will pass through each of these billion worlds. Continuing astonishment, unending wonder, is the experience of those who traverse these gigantic spheres. Not until you visit the last of the Havona worlds, will the tonic of adventure and the stimulus of curiosity disappear from your career. And then will the urge, the forward impulse of eternity, replace its forerunner, the adventure lure of time.
Out beyond Havona there swirl two elliptical circuits of enormous dark gravity bodies pictured in gray on the drawing. The inner circuit is tubular in arrangement. The outer circuit is arranged perpendicularly, being 10,000 times higher than the inner circuit. These gravity bodies neither reflect nor absorb light; thus they completely enshroud Havona and hide it from view of the nearby superuniverses. They so effectively equalize the lines of Havona gravity as to render the central universe a physically balanced and perfectly stabilized creation.

The Grand Universe (Showing Paradise, Havona, and the Seven Superuniverses)
The grand universe is the presently organized and inhabited creation. It consists of the perfect central universe of Havona and the seven evolutionary superuniverses revolving about it. The superuniverses are unfinished; new nebulae are constantly being organized. When finished, each superuniverse will contain 100,000 local universes, each of which will contain about 10,000,000 inhabited planets.
Our superuniverse, the seventh, is called Orvonton, which has a diameter of approximately 500,000 light years and contains more than ten trillion suns. Practically all of the starry realms visible to the naked eye belong to the superuniverse of Orvonton. The vast Milky Way starry system represents the central nucleus of Orvonton. This great aggregation of suns, dark islands of space, double stars, globular clusters, star clouds, spiral and other nebulae, together with myriads of individual planets, forms a watchlike, elongated-circular grouping of about one seventh of the inhabited evolutionary universes. When the angle of observation is propitious, gazing through the main body of this realm of maximum density, you are looking toward Paradise.
Our local universe, Nebadon, is located near the edge of Orvonton. Our planet, Urantia, belongs to the system of Satania, which is well out towards the borderland of Nebadon. The location of Urantia is indicated on the drawing by a dot and the letter U.
Christ Michael, Jesus of Nazareth, is the Sovereign of our local universe of Nebadon.

THE MASTER UNIVERSE (Showing Paradise, Havona, the Seven Superuniverses, and The Now Forming Four Outer Universes)
The master universe encompasses all of material creation. This includes the central universe of Havona, the seven superuniverses, and the four uninhabited outer space levels, which revolve alternately clockwise and counterclockwise. The immensity of the far-flung creation of the Universal Father is utterly beyond the grasp of finite imagination.
In outer space millions of new galaxies are in the process of formation. The first outer space level is about 500,000 light years beyond the periphery of the grand universe. Between the seven superuniverses and the first outer space level and between each of the space levels are enormous elliptical zones of quiescent space activities. They are free from star dust-cosmic fog.
The sizes of the outer space levels are enormous-millions of light years in width. Improved telescopes will reveal to the wondering gaze of our astronomers no less than 375 million new galaxies in outer space. There are already in outer space 70,000 aggregations of matter, each of which is greater than any one of the seven superuniverses-and this is just the beginning of stellar evolution in these regions. We can imagine the immensity of outer space, we can sense its extent and its majestic dimensions, but otherwise we can know little more about these realms.
It is believed that surviving mortals born on the planets of space (like Urantia) in their ascent to Paradise are being trained to take part in the future administration of these outer space levels.

Before the Beginning of Beginnings
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 5 and 6, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
All through the Urantia Papers there are statements and observations suggesting that behind everything, before the beginning, there is the Infinite. Intuitively, we feel that all of the different manifestations of Reality – the Absolutes, the Deities, the Trinities – are different aspects and different phases of the Infinite. God seems to be the personification of the Infinite. The “Universal Father” is the name we give to God in recognition of his relationship to us – his mortal children.
Before the beginning of beginnings there is that being, that Infinite One, whom we know as God. His infinity must be the foundation on which he has built all the structure of Deity, and Absolutes, and Trinities, and all manner of other Reality – deified and undeified; existential and experiential; actual and potential; time-realities and eternity-realities; perfect existences and imperfect existences; space-creations and non-space conditions – in short, everything and everyone that could exist everywhere and every when.
This Being, this Infinite One, is likely known by only two others (his Deity equals), his Eternal Son and their Infinite Spirit. So, even as the Infinite, God the Father is not without associates who understand him; but the two eternal coordinates of the infinite God are able to know him only because they share his infinity. To us of the later-appearing and experiencing orders of being, the quest for the Infinite is the first and the final challenge. To accept such a challenge means that we are willing to embark upon an endless voyage of discovery, in the quantitative infinity of God-on-the-outside, while at the same time, we are in the process of the undertaking and equally endless qualitative exploration of that spirit fragment of God-on-the-inside, the Adjuster (God’s fragment spirit) that even now indwells us during this life in the flesh.
We will pursue the unfolding of his divine purposes (as we are able to discern them) throughout time and transcended-time and on into future-eternity, to see how far we may hope to progress in the quest for the Final Father, the Unqualified Father, the Absolute Father - even the Father Infinite.
Pondering the Master Universe Origin
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 7, edited.) http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
If we are going to study the master universe, it would be a sound idea to start as far back as we can go. There are things that happened on Paradise in preparation for the master universe.
The master universe creation develops through six major divisions of time. These are the six universe ages. (We are now living in the second of these ages.) The First Age is the age of Havona, (the central universe).
The divine creation of Havona is the eternal core of perfection around which the rest of the master universe is slowly revolving, and is slowly expanding into the vastness of all outer space.
Before the Times of Havona
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 7, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
Eternity “dawns” with eternal Havona already in existence. Prior to the “times” of eternal Havona there can be no Factual Reality – but we can still have Valid Concept. This is an important distinction. Concept may be useful and valid without being factual. When we apply time-space language to pre-time-space reality we can never grasp actual fact but we can still hope to have a relatively valid concept.
For example: in our system of counting, the number “one” is the first real number. Nevertheless, our arithmetic recognizes that behind the reality of the number “one” is the concept of “zero”. Zero is really not a factual reality, but it certainly is a valid concept and our mathematics would do very badly without it.
The First Universe Age is the first factual age, but behind it is the concept of a Zero Age, and age before the times of (eternal) Havona. The Papers make use of this Zero Concept without actually using the term, “Zero Age.” They speak of “the dawn of eternity,” a hypothetical state of affairs prior to the appearance of the Infinite Spirit and the central universe. It is this state of affairs that we propose to call the Zero Age. (Thinking about the Zero Age is something like thinking about the zero mark on a twelve-inch ruler. We do not actually measure anything with this mark, but it does show where the first inch starts.)
Source relationships in eternity. When we try to think about “origins” in past eternity we are in real trouble. For example, God is the Father of an Eternal Son who is just as “old” as God! This can be very confusing, even disconcerting. Suppose we forget all about “eternity” and use some comfortable “time language.” If we do this we will discover there are three basic and distinct “source relationships” to be found among the eternal realities – the Three Persons of Deity, the Paradise Isle, and the central universe:
(a) If the Infinite Spirit and the central universe are eternal, then it logically follows that
(b) The Eternal Son and the Isle of Paradise are more eternal because they were both in existence when the Infinite Spirit and Havona appeared. And, if the Son and Paradise are “more” eternal, then –
(c) The Universal Father is most eternal because he is the Father of the Son and, at the same time, the Source of Paradise. This line of reasoning helps us think of at least three stages of development inside of eternity – eternal, eternaler, and eternalest. Suppose we start with the “oldest” of these. Let us go back (or in) just as far as we can possibly go in concept, and then move forward (or outward) step by step, toward the First Universe Age, Havona, and factual reality.
Exploring Past Eternity
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 8, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
When we go back as far as we can in our thinking about God, we find we are trying to imagine what God would have been like before he became the Father of the Eternal Son. This is a pre-Father concept of God. Of course, it is not a factual reality, but it is a useful concept for the “time language” of humans.
What was it like when God was all alone - before he had made any plans about creating anything? If we can think that far back then we may be able to start at the very heart of the Zero Age, and from there work our way outward toward factual reality.
God in the Zero Age
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 8, edited.) http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
At the heart of the Zero Age we find quietness and absolute stability. Nothing is moving. Here God is all-sufficient unto himself. He lives within himself; he is self-contained. He has an inside, but no outside; a within, but no beyond; an eternal present, but neither past nor future. He is self-existent.
God is static.
Static Deity. Static is, in part, defined (in Webster) as: “resting; quiescent; not moving, active, or exerting force of any kind; stable.”Now, here is a point we should bear in mind. What we have just been considering is not something theoretical that existed a long time ago and then stopped; it is just as true today as it was in the depths of past-eternity, and it will go right on being true for all future-eternity. This means we must think in a larger way about God – he can be static at the same time he is everything else. He does all these many things at the same time, and keeps on doing them all the time. He does not have to go from one thing to another.
In time and space terms, we are thinking of God after he has made a plan. He has done nothing about it as yet, but he is planning to do something. That “something” accordingly becomes a possibility; it becomes a potential. We are, at this point, thinking about God after he has decided to express his will. Potentials have come into existence and Deity has become Potential.
Potential Deity. Now we are taking our first step away from the depths of the Zero Age toward factual reality. And again, a definition is in order – the definition of the word “potential.” Potential is, in part, defined (in Webster) as follows: “Existing in possibility, not in actuality; becoming as distinguished from being; possible, or in the making as opposed to actual or realized; latent . . .”
Understanding Potential Deity
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 9, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
To better understand Potential Deity, consider the analogy of an egg containing a yolk and egg-white. Suppose we think of Static Deity as the yolk. The egg divides. There are now two eggs; one of them has a yolk in it. The egg-with-the-yolk we will call Deity. It has moved away from the other egg containing only egg-white because God willed to do this.
God has qualified the egg-with-the-yolk.
Qualified is defined (in Webster) as: (1) “Competent; fit.” (2) “Having complied with conditions . . .” (3) “Limited or modified in some way . . .”
It is in the last sense, “limited or modified in some way,” that we are using the word “qualified.” What God is doing to the egg-with-the-yolk is to limit it, to modify it in some manner, in contrast to the yolkless, which is not modified or qualified in any manner.
The egg with just the egg-white (think energy-matter with the potential of becoming Deity/Spirit through experiential evolution, i.e. motion). For now this egg is the shell of Time - Space creation. It remains motionless. It is named not-deity, or non-deity. It does not have will. It can respond, but does not initiate anything. Temporarily, God “moves away” from this non-deity yolkless egg.
Stages in the Transition of Reality from Static, to Potential, to Associative
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 10-11, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
Static is Infinite Deity (the I Am) separating from Reality through Trinitization at the Absolute Level (like the egg dividing itself, but with separate identities).
Trinitization has a special meaning in the Urantia Book Papers. As we are using it here it means a “once only” act of creation- “limited trinitization.” The trinitizing partners put everything they have into this action; they produce a being equal to themselves, and they become united in some manner. This type of trinitization cannot be repeated.
Potential is achieved when Deity (with personality and will) divides itself to create non-deity or Energy-matter, (Absolute, but Unqualified). Appropriately this non person, non god is called the Unqualified Absolute.
The Associative level is achieved when the always existing, but newly appearing Universal Absolute synthesizes Qualified Deity with Unqualified Absolute non-deity (Energy-matter – the building material of the coming creations).
Both the Qualified (Deity) Absolute and the Unqualified Absolute (Energy-matter) are limitless reservoirs. They contain all God’s plans for the future, and he will draw on them as he makes his plans become real – as he actualizes them.
If these plans have to do with things, with physical matter and non-personal materializations, God will draw upon the Unqualified Absolute. If the plans involve spirit, personal beings, and the like, then he will draw upon the Qualified (Deity) Absolute.
The Associative Relationships
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 11, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
In studying Potential Deity, we are taking our next step toward the outer edge of the Zero Age and factual reality (material creation). Another definition may help:
“Associative,” which is defined (in Webster) as: “Tending to, inducting, or characterized by association.”
The first associative act we should note is the association of the two Absolutes - Qualified and Unqualified. It comes about something like this: since both of them come from the same original (static) Reality, they are related, and the relationship between them is quite real. When the One becomes Two, then we have - One And Another. The word “and” is also a reality, and it universally links together the two Absolutes that contain all of God’s plans for the future. Since this “linking-up action” is universal (all embracing), it has been named the “Universal Absolute.” The Universal Absolute links the other two together like the middle link in a three-link chain.
This linking-up of three Absolutes is one of the associative relationships of eternity. We should now consider another such relationship; this is a new relationship which God enters into, and through which he becomes the Universal Father.
The Fathering Process
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 11-12, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
In the Zero Age, we have conceived of God as if he were a pre-Father. We have been thinking of God simply as the Absolute Person. As the Absolute Person, he is imprisoned by all the limitations of being absolute. Alone, he fills all of Deity. He is all or Total Deity.
There is no Deity outside of himself. There is no “room” for action or maneuvering. So, God decides to produce some room to maneuver. What he does is separate himself from Total Deity, just as he separated himself from all Reality when he moved the Qualified Absolute (deity) away from the Unqualified Absolute (energy).
God does this by separating himself from his Absolute Person. When he separates himself from the Absolute Person, three things happen:
(1) In removing himself from the Absolute Person, God causes a being to exist separate and apart from himself. He thus becomes the cause and the source of this Absolute Person.
(2) If God is the “cause” and the “source” of something, and if that something is a person, then God is the “father” of that person. Therefore, if he can be the father of the Absolute Person then God can be the father of any and all persons, and thus be becomes the “Universal Father.”
(3) If God becomes the “father” of the Absolute Person, this makes that Absolute Person the Original Son of God; but he is nonetheless the Absolute Person for becoming the Son of God. It is customary to speak of this Original Son as the “Eternal” Son, because all of this is happening in eternity.
This is the beginning of the divine fraternity of the eternal Persons of Deity which is completed by the appearance of the Third Person - the Infinite Spirit.
The Absolute Paradise Trinity is in place in our time and space concept.
Existential and Experiential
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 12 - 14, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
Two unusual words bear defining before we go further:
Existential is a word that is used in the Papers with special significance. It means something eternal, without a beginning or an ending. There is no time at which it did not exist. An existential being has full knowledge before any experience. God is existential. Hence the word “existential” is used as the opposite of -
Experiential. This word designates beings and things that have origins. It also designates all beings that can grow by experience. Even some existential realities can have experiential growth to higher levels. Other realities are wholly experiential; man is wholly experiential in his growth.
Thesis, Antithesis, and Synthesis
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 12 - 14, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
Three additional terms (which are borrowed from the philosopher Hegel) are used in our “Preface to The UB” study:
Thesis, antithesis, and synthesis, are, in part, defined (in Webster) as follows: “With Hegel (thesis is) the proposition or conception representing the first . . . stage of developing thought, contrasting with the second stage, or antithesis which negates the thesis, and with the third stage, or synthesis in which . . . thesis and antithesis are brought together.”
Thesis, then, is a proposition, a statement, a presentation. Antithesis (which would be better understood if it were written “anti-thesis”) is something that is different from, contrastive to, and stimulative of, the thesis - but not necessarily antagonistic to the thesis. Synthesis is the bringing together of the two into a mutually expanded and harmonious whole. This is a three-step process.
Thesis, antithesis, and synthesis of Potential Reality
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 12 - 14, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
We have seen this three-step process of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis used, but we did not apply those new terms to it.
When God moved the Qualified Absolute away from Total Infinity, he expressed himself in this movement as constituting this (Qualified) Absolute the first expression of his will-to-action - his first thesis. That which remained behind (energy-matter) was not-moved and not-qualified, and thus became the antithesis of what God had purposed.
The Qualified (Deity) Absolute appears to be God’s first potential thesis; the residual Absolute, the Unqualified Absolute (energy-matter), appears to be the first potential antithesis. When the two are linked together (united) by the Universal Absolute, this constitutes the first synthesis.
The Absolute Machine
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 12 - 14, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
Let us go back to the “time” when God is separating himself from the Absolute Person, and is becoming the Father of that Absolute Person - who thereby becomes his Original Son - the Eternal Son not Michael who incarnated as Jesus on Earth. Michael is the Creator Son of our local universe.
At this same time, God the Father constructs the Absolute Machine - the Isle of Paradise. He apparently builds it for the same reason that humans build machines, to do something (relatively) mechanical and repetitive.
The Isle of Paradise is designed to be the physical center and controller of the physical universes. The Eternal Son is the spiritual center and controller of the spiritual creation.
The Son is personal and spiritual; he is the (actual) Deity thesis. Paradise is neither personal nor spiritual; it is the (actual) non-deity antithesis of the Son.
Here we have a situation that is quite like the one involving the Absolutes, the main difference being that the Absolutes are potential while the Son and Paradise are actual. We have seen that God synthesized the two Absolutes in, and by, the Universal Absolute.
If we did not know better, we might expect that he would do the same thing with the Son and Paradise. But God is not mechanical, and this did not happen. Something unpredictable happened (the Paradise Trinity)!
Thesis upon thesis of Deity Reality
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 12 - 14, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
God does not synthesize Paradise and the Son, the actuality of the not-spiritual and the spiritual.
What God does is unify all (actual) Deity Reality, starting with himself and the Son. In so uniting, the Father-Son produces a Third Being who will forever be the perfect expression, not of either one, but both - the Conjoined Action of the Father-Son. This is the origin of the God of Action, the Infinite Spirit.
In a way, this is a superimposition of thesis upon thesis. If the Son is now the (actual) Deity thesis, then the Father has become the pre-thesis of Deity, and the Infinite Spirit appears as the conjoint thesis of (actual) Deity. Their union expresses the undivided thesis of existential and actual Deity (in the Paradise Trinity).
The Non-synthesis of Actual Reality
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 12 - 14, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
If we had not been told differently, we might have expected that God would have synthesized the totally spirit Son with non-spirit Paradise. This would have produced a balanced situation.
The Actuals (the Eternal Son, Paradise, and Infinite Spirit) would have been synthesized just like the Potentials (the Unqualified Absolute, Deity [Qualified] Absolute) and Universal Absolute .
We could not have foretold that God would unite himself with the Son, and the Spirit, as the Trinity. (This produces an artistic asymmetry that stands in contrast to a mathematical, or a mechanical, symmetrical balance. It is the difference between putting a dot in the exact center of a rectangle, and locating it somewhat off-center. God as an artist, evidently takes precedence of God as an engineer.)
When God does unify a part of Actual Reality, he causes this association to include Deity only. He does not synthesize all Actual Reality, he limits this unification to Actual Deity Reality.
God leaves Paradise out. Since Paradise is left out of this existential synthesis, it presents a problem for all of God’s later-appearing associates and subordinates of experiential status.
And now, at last, we have reached the “dawn” of eternity at the “closing” of the Zero Age, and the beginning of factual reality in the First Age of the master universe – the age of Havona (the Universe of one billion spheres of unimagined beauty and superb grandeur).
Uses of the Word “Universe
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 27, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
The Papers make use of the word “universe” in several different ways: They speak of local universes, super universes, of the central universe, the grand universe, and the master universe.
Havona is the name of the central universe. This is the creation that immediately surrounds Paradise. (Paradise is not a part of any universe; it is the motionless and absolute center of all material things.)
Havona is the “pattern universe,” which God created. It probably has the capacity to serve as a pattern creation for any local universe, for the seven super universes, for the whole master universe, or for anything that might develop beyond the master creation.
Havona is encircled by the seven super universes. Orvonton is the name of the seventh super universe - our super universe. Each super universe is designed to embrace exactly 100,000 local universes. Nebadon is the name of our local universe.
When the Papers speak about the central universe and the seven super universes, they use the name “grand universe.” The grand universe is the presently organized and inhabited creation. It stands in contrast to the unorganized and uninhabited space regions outside of it - the four outer space levels. When the Papers speak of the grand universe plus these four outer space levels, they use the term “master universe.”
When speaking of the four outer space levels alone, the term “outer universes,” or “outer-space universes.” is used. (The term “universe of universes” is also used in the Papers.)
Universe Space Levels
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 27 - 39, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
The best general description of the master universe appears in the Paper, “Space Levels of the Master Universe.” The story given there presents a picture of the master creation as consisting of six concentric and elliptical space levels. Each of these space levels has two names that are used rather interchangeably, as tabulated below:
(1) The Havona space level - The central universe
(2) The super universe space level - The seven super universes
(3) The first outer space level - The Primary Space Level
(4) The second outer space level - The Secondary Space Level
(5) The third outer space level - The Tertiary Space Level
(6) The fourth outer space level - The Quartan Space Level
The Universe Ages
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., page 29, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
There is another concept presented in the The Urantia Book Papers that is most useful. This is the concept of the six successive universe ages. The Papers present each universe age as a period of time that is associated with the opening and the development of a new space level. This relationship is presented in the following tabulation:
The Universe Age - The New Space Level Involved
(1) The First Universe Age - The Havona Space Level
(2) The Second Universe Age - The Super Universe Space Level
(3) The Third Universe Age -The Primary Space Level
(4) The Fourth Universe Age -The Secondary Space Level
(5) The Fifth Universe Age -The Tertiary Space Level
(6) The Sixth Universe Age - The Quartan Space Level
The six revealed Universe Ages reflect the growth and development of the master universe.
The sequence of events manifest how the universe ages synchronize the expansion of Paradise creative forces and personalities outward into the concentric space levels and the reciprocal growth of pilgrims inward and then outward through the eternities of Time and Space (The Supreme), the Transcendent eternity of the Ultimate, and the eternity of the Experiential Absolute to finally achieve the Infinity of the Absolute NOW.
Understanding Creation
One of the new and even revolutionary teachings of The Urantia Book is the revelation of the different universe ages and the evolving Gods championing these ages:
1. The finite age of time and space, the domain of the actualization of the Supreme, with evolution, experience, and progress as its watch words. Mortals are part of the finite age of the Supreme, where two aspects are essential - evolutionary growth and experience.
2. The absonite age of transcended space and super-time, the domain of the actualization of the Ultimate. “Absonite” is the level of reality midway between the finite and the absolute that is characterized by things and beings without beginning or end. (An analogy could be drawn between absonite and morontia, which is the midway level between the mortal life in the flesh and the spiritual worlds) - eventuation.
3. The absolute age, the domain of the unfolding of the experiential God the Absolute - completion.
Space Boundaries and the Six Revealed Space Levels
Appendix III – Space Levels of the Master Universe. William S. Sadler, Jr., page 28, edited.
The entire space of the present and the projected master universe is internally subdivided into six major divisions. There are six revealed space levels. Each of them has two names that are used rather interchangeably:
(1) The Havona space level - The central universe
(2) The super universe space level - The Seven Super Universes
(3) The first outer space level - The Primary Space Level
(4) The second outer space level - The Secondary Space Level
(5) The third outer space level - The Tertiary Space Level
(6) The fourth outer space level - The Quartan Space Level
(7) Hypothesis of an Unrevealed Seventh Outer Space Level leading to The Infinite Existential Absolute – The deification and Personification of the previously “Unqualified” Absolute” fusing with the Universal Absolute.
Note # 1
The Hypothetical Unrevealed Seventh Potential Age
After many years of dedicated study and contemplation of the Urantia Papers, William S. Sadler, Jr. wrote A Study of the Master Universe in which he developed concepts of The Urantia Book. He intended to write 31 Appendices to A Study of the Master Universe of which 27 were completed.
The planned but unwritten appendices were:
Appendix XXVIII - The Nature of the Deity Absolute
Appendix XXIX - The Nature of the Unqualified Absolute
Appendix XXX - The Nature of the Universal Absolute
Appendix XXXI - The Concept of the Infinite
Regretfully, Mr. Sadler suffered a stroke before he could finish the final four appendices. It may be hypothesized that Sadler's thorough knowledge of The Urantia Book, would have given readers great insights into the roles of The Deity Absolute, The Unqualified Absolute, The Universal Absolute, and the Concept of the Infinite.
Such a study might have explained intimations of a seventh potential age to complete the transformation to absoluteness for All (which is in the inconceivably remote future). Mr. Sadler might also have explained the inconsistency of six rather than the “normal” seven stages of creative development.
The Normal Seven Stages of Creative Development
Experiencing the seven Paradise Trinity relationships (Father acting alone, Son acting alone, Infinite Spirit acting alone, Father-Son collaborating, Father-Infinite Spirit collaborating, Son-Infinite Spirit collaborating, and then all seven relationships acting together. Experiencing these “estates” is the normal learning experience of ascenders in their ascension careers.
This scheme is observable in the announced purposes for each of the seven super universes.
Each major purpose in super universe evolution will find fullest expression in only one of the seven super universes, and therefore does each super universe have a special function and a unique nature.
Orvonton, the super universe to which our local universe belongs, is known chiefly because of its tremendous and lavish bestowal of merciful ministry to the mortals of its realms.
It is very difficult to describe the true nature of the evolutionary purpose that is unfolding in Orvonton (the seventh super universe), but it is implied in noting that the six unique purposes of cosmic evolution manifested in the six associated super creations are being inter-associated into a meaning-of-the-whole in Super Universe Seven.
It is for this reason that we have sometimes conjectured that the evolved and finished personalization of God the Supreme will in the remote future rule the perfected seven super universes in all the experiential majesty of his then attained almighty sovereign power.
Similarly, the same inter-association experience may be planned for the completion of actualization of All seekers of Absolute Infinity. This inter-association would be accomplished under the rule of the finished personalization of the previously “Unqualified” Absolute.
Initiating the First Universe Age
A Study of the Master Universe, (William S. Sadler, Jr., pages 12 - 14, edited.)
http://www.urantia.org/study-master-universe/study-master-universe
The first real universe age is the age of Havona, however, Havona was never created. It is simply convenient to look at Havona as a creation for easier comprehension.
So, we will continue to present eternal events in time sequence. At the close of the Zero Age before the first age of Havona, there were the three Absolutes (Deity, Unqualified, and Universal) linked together. These absolutes are the infinite reservoirs that contain all of God’s plans for the future. This means they are potentials. (They are often designated as the Absolutes of Potentiality.)
There are just three actualities: the Universal Father, the Eternal Son, and the Isle of Paradise. In other words, there are two existential Deities and a “somewhat” physical base from which they can take action. This is all there is of actual reality. This is about to change through the creative technique of trinitization.
Note # 2
Creative Techniques
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
Creativity on Paradise could mean all of God's transformative techniques: personal, pre-personal, and super-personal - creation, fragmentation, and eventuation.
The Papers refer to a series of transformative acts by Paradise Deity as follows ". . . beings . . . who are trinitized, created, eventuated, or eternalized.
Creative techniques used on Paradise or Havona may differ from those used in time and space.
Sequence of Actions that End the Zero Age and Begin the First Age of Havona
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, William S. Sadler, edited.
The action that begins the age of Havona is a Deity-trinitizing act on the part of the two existential Deities. This produces some immediate additions to, and changes in, reality:
(a) The Father and the Son unite as the Father-Son (duality).
(b) The Infinite Spirit appears as their Deity equal.
(c) The Central Universe of Havona makes its appearance.
(d) The Father, Son, and Spirit unite as the Paradise Trinity. In the “dawn” of the First Age there are: the Three Absolutes of Potentiality; the Three Persons of Deity; Paradise; the Central Universe of Havona; and the Trinity. (None of them ever had a real beginning. All are absolutely eternal.)
At this juncture, Paradise bestowed on the Unqualified Absolute the potential of all the uncreated physical universes of the future. Reality has been transferred from the Potential to the Actual.
The Existential Paradise Trinity
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
Trinity is deity, but it is not personality.
The Paradise Trinity is the Deity-union of Father, Son, and Spirit. We are inclined to think of this Trinity rather loosely as three persons working together, but the Trinity itself is not three persons at all. The Trinity is something real, in and of itself, something that exists separate and apart from the three persons.
It is more accurate to think of the Paradise Trinity as a corporation that is organized by the Three Persons of Deity. The corporation has three directors: the Father, the Son, and the Infinite Spirit. When they meet as directors of the corporation, they act as a corporation - the Trinity.
We should remember that while the Deities are continuously sitting as directors in the trinity union, at the same time they are apart from the Trinity and working as persons, either individually or together. They do not go from one activity to another. They do all things at the same “time,” and they do them all of the time. Absolute Deity, even Ultimate Deity, is not limited by either time or space (in what mortals think of as in a quantum manner).
Note #3
Quantum Physics in Time and Space - Entanglement
The New York Times, Scientists Report Finding Reliable Way to Teleport Data, By John Markoff, May 29, 2014
In quantum physics, the theory of entanglement explains that particles separated by light-years can still appear to remain connected, with the state of one particle instantaneously affecting the state of another.
Stated somewhat differently, quantum entanglement is a quantum mechanical phenomenon in which the quantum states of two or more objects have to be described with reference to each other, even though the individual objects may be spatially separated.
Recent experiments have demonstrated the accurate teleportation of quantum information over short distances.
Success at greater distances (up to a kilometer) will offer an affirmative solution to a thought experiment known as Bell’s theorem, proposed in 1964 by the Irish physicist John Stewart Bell as a method for determining whether particles connected via quantum entanglement communicate information faster than the speed of light.
Justification for a Trinity
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
Why Is a Trinity Necessary?
Deity really is indivisible. There can be a threeness only so long as there is also a oneness. By having a trinity, God is able to keep the unity of deity – the oneness – and, at the same time enjoy the association of two other equal beings.
Deity is so indivisible it could never be divided, and actually never was at any point in time or eternity. In describing “God’s escape from Infinity,” all of the events took place at the same “time.” God could separate himself from Total Deity (the Deity Absolute) only by replacing his undivided (pre-Father) Deity presence with the undivided Deity presence of the Paradise Trinity. As he is removing his (pre-Father) Deity presence, he is replacing it with the Trinity presence.
While he is doing this, he is also becoming the Father of the Son; and with the Son, the trinitizing source of the Spirit; and with the Son and Spirit he is uniting in the Paradise Trinity.
The Original Trinitization
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, Appendix VIII –§ 2. Trinitizing Techniques. William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
The act of trinitization appears to have three conceptually sequential - but factually simultaneous - steps: dualization, trinitization, and trinity formation.
First, the Father dualizes the initial personalization of deity, himself, and the Eternal Son. Second, the two trinitize the completed personalization of existential deity, the Infinite Spirit. Finally, they consummate their deity union in the Paradise Trinity.
At no point in this threefold transaction is deity ever divided. This is a threefold, simultaneous act. As the pre-Father is withdrawing (as a person) from diffusion throughout the Total of Deity he is replacing his presence by that of the Paradise Trinity, the presence of undivided-existential Deity; and contained within this transaction is the dualization of the Son, and the trinitization of the Spirit.
The Uniqueness of Havona
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
Havona is, by far, the most interesting part of the master universe. It is so exotic, it is difficult to classify.
In the First Age, Havona was entirely alone. It was an isolated universe; in fact, it was completely isolated because there was nothing but empty space beyond it. In those remote times it had no external relationships, only relationships within itself and inwardly towards Paradise.
Havona has no beginning in time. It is pre-supreme and pre-ultimate, hence, pre-experiential.
Havona is also difficult to classify in terms of the levels of functional reality. It is neither finite, absonite, nor absolute. Beings exist and things are happening in Havona on each of the three functional levels. It is a creation that was never created; the creatures that live in Havona were never created. It is finite in space, but it is much more than finite considering what is going on in the affairs of its billion perfect worlds.
The Architects of the Master Universe
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, Appendix XV., Master Architects and Transcendentalers, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
We have been informed that God, as a person, creates, and as a super person, eventuates. Absonite beings are not created - they are eventuated. (See Appendix VIII., § 3.)
The “eventuated” Master Architects are present in the First Age. The Master Architects are neither finite or absolute - they are absonite beings (midway between finite and absolute) - transcendentalers.
The Architects are neither creators or creatures. They are living blueprints, or architect’s plans, of the master universe. They personify God’s plan for the entire master creation. The Architects begin their work in the post-Havona creations long before anyone else is on the scene of action, getting the space-stage ready for new developments, and all of this work is in process long before the creators and the administrators of these post-Havona universes make their appearance.
The Master Architects are organized for service in seven corps, all in accordance with the geographic plans of the cosmos, the plan of Paradise and the master universe - the Central Isle and the six concentric space levels.
Time and Space
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, Appendix IV, The Universe Ages, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
Time and space are associated as progressive evolutionary mechanisms of the master universe.
The major space divisions of the master creation are the six space levels. The major time divisions of the master universe are the six universe ages - the age of Havona, the age of the super universes, and the four ages of the outer space levels.
We are now living in the Second Universe Age, the age of the super universes.
Post Havona Ages
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, Appendix IV, The Universe Ages, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
All post-Havona ages are experiential (evolutionary growth through experience). Experiential deity is actualizing (progressively evolving to the antecedent divinity endowment of grand universe potential of energy and personality) in the post-Havona epochs of the master universe.
These ages are characterized by a two-way procession of ascenders and descenders. In the present universe age, the Supreme Creators and their associates are descending from Paradise to the time-space creations, and the evolutionary creatures are ascending from these same creations in the Paradise ascent.
In the next age, the finaliters will be associated with others who will serve in outer space, and it is anticipated that outer-spacers will be ascending inwardly and upwardly to Paradise through our then perfected super universes.
Finaliters. Members of the Mortal Finaliter Corps. The corps consists primarily of beings who are Father-fused with their Thought Adjusters. Ascendant mortals become a part of this corps when they have ascended to the sixth stage of spirit being, have become residents of Paradise, and have completed the progressive course in divinity and absonity (the absonite level of reality between the finite and the absolute).
The Challenge of Imperfection
A Study of the Master Universe, Chapter II, The Evolutionary Antithesis, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
In the First Universe Age of Havona, everything is in balance; all is orderly; the spheres of eternal Havona swing in settled and established orbits around the motionless Isle of Paradise.
Disharmony is unknown; disorder has never appeared. All creation follows in an unchanging pattern of flawless perfection, age after age.
And then, God expands this perfectly balanced and symmetrical creation. The organized universe expands outward and space-ward. New and outlying realms begin to appear - realms of unsettled physical development; realms of imperfect nature; realms in which creatures of imperfection soon appear; realms of potential evil and subsequent sin occur through the unwise choice of imperfect creatures.
But, it would be an understatement to say God and the residents of Havona merely love the adventure of a challenge. They crave the opportunity to serve in the Father's plan.
The Grandiose Plan
A Study of the Master Universe, Chapter II, The Evolutionary Antithesis, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
When God separated himself from Total Reality (deity plus non-deity), he did not abandon non-deity (the energy-matter of the Unqualified Absolute). Rather he immediately instigated a magnificent plan to transform all non-deity to personified absolute deity. This plan included every fragment of energy stored by Paradise and controlled by the Unqualified Absolute.
The energy fragments began entering the Grand Universe as building blocks for the construction of material universes where the Creator Sons and Daughters would eventually bring the evolving energy fragments to life in the animal worlds, and even later qualify them as personalities (tabernacles of God).
The Power of Choice
A Study of the Master Universe, Chapter II, The Evolutionary Antithesis, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
“Suddenly” (relatively speaking), there is a vast creation teeming with imperfect creatures; every one of them has been endowed with the priceless power of choice by God. Each one of these creatures is a sovereign within himself. Each one of them can choose, yes or no, concerning citizenship in the universe and son-ship with God.
And none of the creature overseers dare interfere with these choices lest he find himself trespassing the will of God, for it is God who gives creatures the priceless power of choice. Without the power of choice, without God’s gift of personality, mortals would be little more than living machines. But with this gift of (relative) free will, mortals are more than machines. Mortals are men who may choose to be even more than men. Mortals may choose to be ascending sons of God, or contrarily to choose oblivion.
The mortal power of choice was the challenge that confronted the citizens of the eternal realms as they embarked upon the Supreme Adventure – when they left the settled domains of divine perfection and came out into the new creative frontier, into the new space level of the super universes, to take up posts as the creators, organizers, and administrators of the unsettled and uncertain evolutionary domains of time.
The Antithesis of Perfection
A Study of the Master Universe, Chapter II, The Evolutionary Antithesis, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
Only God, would have dared to unite the purest form of spirit with the lowest type of creature capable of being endowed with personality - mortal man. This “marriage” brought together the highest and the lowest. Only God would so combine the spirit of adventure with the divine love that would cause an infinite being to be willing to enter into everlasting partnership with the mortal children of the animal-origin races of the inhabited worlds.
If these actions and transactions are not exciting, and adventurous, and unpredictable, what could be? Suddenly, so to speak, the existential perfection of the flawless creation of eternity is challenged by the appearance of the antithesis of perfection, by the appearance of the imperfect and evolutionary domains of time and space.
God is very concerned about the progress of his plan. Through his personality circuit, through his mortal mind indwelling fragments, and through the reflectivity of Majeston, the Father observes all. No detail, event, or thought in this grand creation adventure goes unnoticed by him.
The Second Universe Age
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, Appendix VI, Total Deity in the Universe Ages, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
The Second Universe Age is the present age, the age of the evolutionary super universes. This age started with a primary creative impetus that came from the personalities and agencies of the pre-existent Paradise-Havona system.
Other than our exotic beginning, this age is also unique in other ways. It is the age of the evolutionary growth of the Supreme Being. When the Supreme has completed his growth, this age will come to its end and the opportunity to participate in this wondrous experience will no longer exist. In our Age, it is possible to have finite experience and grow by the evolutionary process. Subsequent ages will not be able to participate in this adventure.
Successive ages will expand destiny. They will provide the techniques for overriding previous growth limits. For example: First-Age Havona is a perfect universe. In fact, it is a "perfection-limited" universe. In the Second Age, the present age, Havona perfection expands outward into the imperfect super universes to achieve new experiential destinies.
The Supreme Being
Appendices to a Study of the Master Universe, Appendix IV, The Universe Ages, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
The Supreme is spiritually and personally present in Havona.
He was there before the organization of the super universes.
He functions primarily in Havona as a spirit personality.
He functions secondarily in the grand universe as a personality of sovereign power, the Almighty Supreme.
The Father, Son, and Spirit collaborate with the Supreme, but only as the Trinity, during the present age.
We cannot find the Supreme in the present age.
The Supreme Being is limited in creator function.
His growth is disclosed in the ascending and descending movements of personalities.
Finite creatures have their existences within him.
The evolutionary growth of the Supreme and creature participation therein is limited to the present age.
The Supreme Being Is a Duality
God the Supreme in Havona is the personal spirit reflection of the triune Paradise Deity.
The Almighty Supreme, Who is evolving on the value-level of non-personal activities, and the spirit person of God the Supreme are one reality - the Supreme Being.
(It has been stated that unity begets duality, that duality begets triunity, and that triunity is the eternal ancestor of all things.)
God the Ultimate
God the Ultimate is indicative of personal Deity functioning on the divinity levels of the absonite (beyond time) and on the universe spheres of super time and transcended space.
The Ultimate is a super supreme eventuation of Deity. The Supreme is the Trinity unification comprehended by finite beings; the Ultimate is the unification of the Paradise Trinity comprehended by absonite beings.
Transcendentals are sub-infinite and sub-absolute but super finite and super creatural. Transcendentals eventuate [appear] as an integrating level correlating the super values of absolutes with the maximum values of finites.
The Ultimate is the apex of transcendental reality even as the Supreme is the capstone of evolutionary-experiential reality. And the actual emergence of these two experiential Deities lays the foundation for the second experiential Trinity. This is the Trinity Absolute, the union of God the Supreme, God the Ultimate, and the unrevealed Consummator of Universe Destiny. And this Trinity has theoretical capacity to activate the Absolutes of potentiality - Deity, Universal, and Unqualified. But the completed formation of this Trinity Absolute could take place only after the completed evolution of the entire master universe, from Havona to the fourth and outermost space level.
The Absolute Level
The absolute level is beginning-less, endless, timeless, and space-less.
On Paradise, time and space are nonexistent; the time-space status of Paradise is absolute.
Whenever, wherever, and however the absolute level of Deity functions, Paradise-absolute values
and meanings are the norm.
Experiential Trinities
The Paradise Trinity - the eternal Deity union of the Universal Father, the Eternal Son, and the Infinite Spirit - is existential in actuality, but all potentials are experiential. Therefore, this Trinity constitutes the only Deity reality embracing infinity, and therefore there occurs the universe phenomena of the actualization of God the Supreme, God the Ultimate, and God the Absolute.
The Ultimate Trinity, now evolving, will eventually consist of the Supreme Being, the Supreme Creator Personalities, and the absonite Architects of the Master Universe, those unique universe planners who are neither creators not creatures. God the Ultimate will eventually and inevitably powerize and personalize as the Deity consequence of the unification of this experiential Ultimate Trinity in the expanding arena of the limitless master universe.
The Absolute Trinity - the second experiential Trinity - now in process of actualization, will consist of God the Supreme, God the Ultimate, and the Unrevealed Consummator of Universe Destiny (possibly the Unqualified Absolute). This Trinity functions on both personal and super personal levels, even to the borders of the non-personal, and its unification in universality would experientialize Absolute Deity.
Yet another speculation regarding the transition of experiential potential to absolute is the unfinished role of the triune Universal Absolute, Deity Absolute, and the Unqualified Absolute.
A Final Word - “Absonite”
Appendix XV, Master Architects and Transcendentalers, William S. Sadler, Jr., edited.
The Urantia Book instructs us that Transcendentalers are neither infinite nor finite. They are absonite. This word is not found in English; it is a word introduced in the Papers. It is a coined word — a composite word constructed of two words - absolute and finite. The first two syllables of "absolute" and the last syllable of "finite" will go together as "abso-" and "-nite" to make the word "absonite." This word is appropriately symbolic of a reality that is neither absolute nor finite, but which lies between the two.
The terms "absonity" and "absonites" can relate to ascending mortals: We are told that, before ascenders leave the local universe they will achieve full satisfaction of equality of self-realization regarding all pursuits of an artistic, intellectual, and social nature. Then they encounter a new spirit differential that will not be equalized until they have finished the Havona pilgrimages. Ascenders will then become aware of another new differential, an absonite differential, and this will not become equalized until they have attained the status of seventh-stage spirits - a super-finite status. These statements suggest that the development of some "supernal absonite" quality of being is a part of the expected evolutionary growth of all mortal ascenders.
End
